Well I used to like going out and throwing back a few
And hanging with the locals at the tavern until two
But lately moneys gotten tight since moving to this state
She’s replaced all my exes as my most expensive date
All my lunch and dinners now in doubt
Cuz I can’t afford a burger at the In-N-Out
So after paying bills, there’s no more thrills, all I can do is cry
Yeah, California punched me in the eye
Yeah the traffic’s always heavy and my apartments sprung a leak
But it’s hard to keep complaining when its sunny every day of the week
So I call to tell the landlord about the leak he needs to fix
But it always goes to voicemail before and after six
Well I go to work, and pay my rent
This song’s my only way to vent
So after paying bills, there’s no more thrills, all I can do is cry
Yeah, California punched me in the eye
Now I feel I’m in the 12th round of a major title fight
I’m David, she’s Goliath and my punch is getting light
But my wallets even lighter from the price of gas I pay
And now my car is in the shop from all the pot holes in my way
But I go to work and pay my rent
So I’m not urban camping in tents
So after paying bills, there’s no more thrills, all I can do is cry
Yeah, California punched me in the eye

I’m heading home, long overdue
This flight’s giving me time to think
Back to the town where we grew up
On the Dakota side of the state
Population 1,000 or so but we always found something to do
Summers shootin’ hoops, families gathering at the lakes
and the Flekkefest parade
We had some churches and a grocery store
A tiny bar and unlocked doors
We all cheered for the hometown Knights
And our main street had no traffic lights
Now all grown up and away on my own
I still think back to our old town
Where lifelong friendships had begun
I do cherish them all every day
Now I look forward to seeing my old crew once a year
We’ll meet back in town, share stories, laughs and beers
So what else can I say
But thank you to my town now far away
